Pavlik Likely Back in October: Arum Eyes Bute, Kessler

By Rick Reeno

Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum advised BoxingScene.com that Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34KOs) will likely return in the month of October. Arum is working out the details with HBO for an October televised date.

On Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California – Pavlik made his HBO return and won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over Will Rosinsky.

Top Rank is now positioning Pavlik for a big fight in October. Arum tells BoxingScene that among the vast crop of potential opponents at 168-pounds – showdowns with former champions Lucian Bute (30-1 24KOs) and Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34KOs) are “the easiest fights to make.”

Pavlik’s return could possibly tie in with a potential featherweight fight between WBO champion Orlando Salido and unbeaten contender Mikey Garcia, according to Arum.

Victor Ortiz Made The Right Call: Health First, Dollars Later

By Lyle Fitzsimmons

Here’s a news flash, folks… I love sports.

I played football, baseball and hockey to moderate success as a youngster, picked up distance running as an intermittent hobby in my 30s and have been fortunate enough to scratch out something resembling a post-college living watching and writing about athletes in action.

But I’ve always had a special affection for boxing.

Whether it was the feel of hitting a heavy bag, landing a right hand or simply sitting back with the wife and watching a couple high-enders mix it up on pay-per-view TV, it’s had me since hello.

I never kidded myself into thinking I had mettle to compete on anything near a respectable level, but through some middling training in a north Philly gym, a sparring match in Tampa with a female world champion and years of simply being around fighters and trainers, I do have a feel for what it requires.

Matthysse's Power Blasts Humberto Soto in Five Rounds

By Rick Reeno

Staples Center, Los Angeles – Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29KOs) went to war with Humberto Soto (59-8-2, 35KOs) and took him out in five rounds to capture the vacant WBC Continental Americas super lightweight title

The fight began a little more technical than expected, but it was Soto who turned up the heat in the final minute. The bombs were flying by both fighters in the second. They continued to trade punches in the third. Soto at this point was getting rocked back by the harder shots of Matthysse. In the final minute, Soto got in his shots and opened up a small cut near the corner of Matthysse’s right eye.

Matthysse was landing the better punches in the fourth, although Soto was holding his own and answering back every time. At the end of the fifth, Matthysse landed a combination of punches, with huge right hands, that had Soto reeling back and put him down. He was barely able to make it up and walk back to his corner. Soto’s corner stopped the fight before the start of the sixth.

Roger Romo Boxer Interview With The Boxing Bar

Roger Romo is a bright prospect born and bred from the what he calls the “City of Boxnard” (Oxnard,CA). Romo is the little brother of boxing superstar “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas. But Roger does not believe in taking the easy way to the top of the boxing world. He wants to pave his own way, which is the only way he feels is the right way. That’s his way. Roger refuses to live in the shadow of no man. And if someone dares to try to tell him different, be assured that he will be quick to have a say. Roger can spark up when he knows its time for business. Like Mike Tyson’s mentor and adopted father, Cus D’Amato, used to say … “To make a fire you need a spark. Once you got a spark , you fan it.  The you got a fire. You fan it more then it becomes a roaring blaze”.“Boxnard” is more than happy to open its arms to its future star.
